Let's Get The Party Started
Only 3 more days until Fiesta 2007 begins. After that there's ten days of some of the best fun you can find anywhere in Texas as San Antonio celebrates with food, friends and fun. So how do you start the biggest celebration in Texas? You join hundreds of others in Alamo Plaza for the Fiesta Opening Ceremonies.Starting at 9 a.m. right in front of the Alamo the Fiesta Commission will host the annual kickoff with dancing, music and remarks from dignitaries. KENS "Great Day In SA" will be broadcasting the festivities live with Kristina Guerrero hosting the event. Sen. John Cornyn is scheduled to be the guest of honor and Roberto Garcia of AT&T Wireless will be presenting a check for $25,000 to the Fiesta Commission Charitable Foundation.
But now for the real scoop on the event from your friendly blogger. Each year probably the biggest draw to the ceremonies are the medals. Tons of them being passed around. If you ever wanted to trade Fiesta medals the opening ceremonies are the place to be. People will show up as early as 8 a.m. to get started on the exchanges.
It's also a great time to get your picture made with some of the Fiesta perennials such as Cal Sumner, reigning as Fiesta's Hat King with his oversized headgear. You can also find the kings and their courts as well as all the Fiesta royalty. Probably the most popular participants are the military ambassadors who have the coolest medals of Fiesta. But get there early because they always run out of medals soon after they arrive. They're that popular.
Finally at the end of the celebration we all get the party started with a standard Fiesta tradition of pelting each other with cascarons. For those of you who are curious about this strange ritual you'll have to show up and learn from the pros. Hopefully the picture gives you a hint at what's to come.
See you there Friday morning.
